German Biathlon Star Laura Dahlmeier Dies in Laila Peak Rockfall

German double Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier, aged 31, has died following a climbing accident on Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, the German Olympic Sports Confederation has confirmed.

The incident occurred around midday on Monday, July 28, 2025, at approximately 5,700 m (18,700 ft) above sea level in the Hushe Valley area of Gilgit–Baltistan. While climbing with partner Marina Eva Krauss, Dahlmeier was struck by a sudden rockfall. Krauss managed to descend to base camp and call for help, but rescue helicopters were grounded due to heavy fog and unstable weather.

Efforts by German and American climbing teams were hindered by adverse conditions. Officials confirmed Dahlmeier’s death after rescue teams reached the site on Wednesday, July 30.

Following her death, Dahlmeier’s management disclosed her written wish that no further rescue attempts be made to retrieve her body from the mountain, in order to avoid putting others at risk—aligned with her family’s wishes.

🏅 Athletic Legacy

  • Dahlmeier earned two gold medals (in sprint and pursuit) and a bronze at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, becoming the first woman to win both sprint and pursuit in the same Games.
  • She also claimed multiple world championship titles and clinched the overall Biathlon World Cup in the 2016–17 season.
  • Retiring from competitive biathlon in 2019 at age 25, Dahlmeier authored a children’s climate-awareness book, served as a ZDF biathlon expert, and later became a certified mountain and ski guide in 2023, actively volunteering with the Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain rescue service.

The Karakoram region is notably dangerous during the monsoon season, with frequent landslides and flooding. Since late June, Pakistan has reported at least 288 flood-related deaths, and many tourists remain unaccounted for in affected zones.

Legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner commented that Laila Peak, despite its modest overall elevation (~6,070 m), is technically demanding and increasingly prone to dangerous rockfall due to glacial melt and climatic shifts BILD.
